Nail surgery is often advised for people with recurrent in-growing toe nails, excessively curved nails, thick problematic nails or painful toe nails. It is a very simple and effective procedure which is a permanent solution to a problem nail. If its your first visit to clinic we advise booking an initial first footcare appointment as it maybe we can help your nail without the need for surgery.
Firstly, the toe is injected with local anaesthetic so that the toe goes completely numb and you will not feel any pain throughout the procedure. The offending part of the nail or the whole nail is then removed depending on the problem. Phenol is then applied to the nail matrix (where the nail cells grow from) to prevent the part of nail from growing again- giving a permanent solution to the problem.
The only painful part of the procedure is the local anaesthetic. After this has been done, the procedure is completely pain-free. The anaesthetic takes around 3-4 hours to wear off, after which point ibuprofen or paracetamol may be taken to relieve any unlikely soreness.
We normally allow an hour for the procedure. This allows time for paperwork and to make sure you are ok before you go home. The procedure itself takes about 20 minutes.
You will need to keep the toe clean and dressed for approximately 6 weeks, or until the area is healed. You will still beable to walk and go to school or work. We will see you for regular dressing appointments but you will need to change the toe yourself between appointments. We will provide all dressings and advice that you need.
