Flat Feet

Definition

Flat feet (or pes planus) is when the foot has a very low arch or is completely flat on the ground.

Just because you have flat feet does not necessarily mean they need treatment as many people have this foot shape without any symptoms or problems.

Causes

  • Flat feet can be hereditary
  • Problems with bone formation of feet developing before birth
  • Other medical conditions for example, Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, or Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
  • Possible overuse of the plantar fascia leading to inflammation, which could be caused by:

  1. Poor footwear
  2. Injury
  3. Obesity
  4. Increased age

Symptoms

  • No arch or very low arch
  • May have pain in the foot, ankle, knee leg or back

Treatment

Treatment is not necessary unless you are experiencing symptoms or pain.

If pain is present treatment may include:

  • Orthotics to help support and offload the soft tissues causing pain
  • Weight loss if needed
  • Stretching exercises

In extreme cases surgery maybe required. Speak to your Podiatrist for advice.
