Bunions

What are they?

Bunions or hallux valgus is a deformity of the big toe, which means the big toe turns towards the second toe, so the base of the big toe sticks out leaving a lump at the side of the foot.  This can be painful and rub on your shoes.

Causes

  • Cause could be of unknown nature in most cases
  • Bunions can be hereditary
  • Tight fitting shoes can make the problem worse
  • Females are more likely to develop bunions than men

Symptoms

  • Pain in the big toe
  • Difficulty walking
  • Inflammation of the big toe
  • The second toe may also become deformed

Treatments

  • If the bunion is not problematic then no treatment would be needed
  • Ensure shoes fit properly
  • Orthotics maybe prescribed by a Podiatrist to help relieve pressure and prevent the bunion getting worse
  • If the bunion is painful or swollen then ice may help
  • If pain is severe or there is major deformity then surgery maybe recommended
