Bunions
What are they?
Bunions or hallux valgus is a deformity of the big toe, which means the big toe turns towards the second toe, so the base of the big toe sticks out leaving a lump at the side of the foot. This can be painful and rub on your shoes.
Causes
- Cause could be of unknown nature in most cases
- Bunions can be hereditary
- Tight fitting shoes can make the problem worse
- Females are more likely to develop bunions than men
Symptoms
- Pain in the big toe
- Difficulty walking
- Inflammation of the big toe
- The second toe may also become deformed
Treatments
- If the bunion is not problematic then no treatment would be needed
- Ensure shoes fit properly
- Orthotics maybe prescribed by a Podiatrist to help relieve pressure and prevent the bunion getting worse
- If the bunion is painful or swollen then ice may help
- If pain is severe or there is major deformity then surgery maybe recommended
